Paul Born to Speak in Vancouver
Simon Fraser University through the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue and Canada's World - a national citizens' dialogue on Canadian international policy invite you attend to a special seminar featuring Paul Born, author of the highly acclaimed book Community Conversations: Mobilizing the Ideas, Skills, and Passion of Community Organizations, Governments, Businesses, and People. Paul is internationally recognized for his innovative approaches to community building. Paul will share his insights about this important work and lead us in a discussion of the role of conversations that lead to sustainable community change. Translink Community Consultation Meetings

National Association for the Dually Diagnosed, Online Training Initiative - The National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD) and Essential Learning (EL) are pleased to announce an online training initiative where individuals can take courses and earn continuing education credits over the Internet! The partnership between NADD and EL offers a wide variety of accredited online courses that cover an extensive selection of topics that will help participants improve their understanding and acquire new skills. Effective Counselling of Persons with High Functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Autism Today offers this new online presentation by Nathan Ory, psychologist and author. This presentation will explain how shifting levels of consciousness can affect the awareness and coping ability of a person with autism, and how some typical ASD thinking patterns can create anxiety and mental health issues. Also covered will be how to avoid some of the typical traps of literal thinking, overgeneralization and one-track mind, and idiosyncratic problem-solving common to many persons with ASD. Online Workshops for Writers with Disabilities. The Canadian Abilities Foundation is presenting a series of online workshops for people with disabilities who are interested in the writing life. ACT - Autism Community Training (formerly ACT BC) offers a variety of workshops to families and professionals supporting children and adults with autism spectrum disorder. Forthcoming live events include Mental Health and Individuals with Autism-A Primer for Community Professionals and Parents on March 27, Hands on Verbal Behavior on April 2-4, and Helping Children with ASD (and their Parents) Get the Sleep they Need on April 25. All three events will take place in Vancouver. As well, ACT has a growing slate of webcasts -- videotaped live workshops -- delivered via the ACT site at www.actcommunity.net. ACT webcasts contain all the content of one of our live events, and are available to subscribers 24/7 anywhere that has a high-speed internet connection. AUCC Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities - The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada is pleased to announce this new scholarship programme. The objective of the program is to encourage Canadian students with disabilities interested in obtaining a first university degree, to pursue university studies. Up to ten (10) scholarships valued at $5,000 CDN will be awarded. Calls for Submissions

Get on the Train! Call for Host Agencies and Panel Members - Get on the Train is a learning tour on employment that provides a unique way for service providing organizations to increase their knowledge and share their expertise of supported and customized employment practices through mentoring and networking. The tour involves six host agencies in BC. and will occur during the last week of April and the first week in May 2009. Seven communities will be visited over this two week period. The initiative is currently looking for both host agencies and panel members.

The Early Years Conference for next year has been scheduled for February 4th-6th, 2010, and will be held at the Victoria Conference Centre and The Fairmont Empress. "The conference will explore early childhood, family and community development through the lens of Child Rights… Conference participants will have the opportunity to consider research, policy, and practice from a child's rights perspective in order to further the quality of their work with children, families and communities.” The conference welcomes anyone who works with children and families, including (but not limited to) early childhood educators, nurses, speech therapists, pregnancy outreach groups etc. They also hope that families and students will attend. The conference has also put out a call for presenters. Deadline for submissions is April 30th, 2009.

"Finding Our Voice” Invitation to participate - The BC Coalition of People with Disabilities is sponsoring a Participatory Action Research project called "Finding our Voice”, which is looking at people's experiences and expectations for rehabilitation services and supports. Woodlands Project - In March 2009, the Douglas College Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts will present a month-long artistic exploration of the former Woodlands School. The project will consist of two concurrent presentations in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre and in the Amelia Douglas Gallery. In attempt to present as full and diverse a picture as possible, academics, community groups and individuals are invited to participate in the project by approaching the subject in their own ways. Proposals for forums, discussions and other artistic and academic activities in any subject related to the project are welcomed. Click here for more details.
