BC Disability Benefits Help Sheet

These free self-help guides are designed for people with disabilities who need to access provincial disability benefits and the medical services, equipment and supplies provided by the Ministry of Housing and Social Development (MHSD). The sheets were updated on March 31, 2010. See below for the letter to community partners from the BC Coalition of People with Disabilities, regarding the changes.

*Update: November 18, 2011:

BCCPD recently updated two Help Sheets (read the help sheets here):

  • Help Sheet 7: Health Supplements for People with Disabilities. The update reflects changes the government has made to its policy on orthotics.
  • Help Sheet 12: Income Assistance Application Process for People with Disabilities. The update focuses on the Ministry of Social Development's practice of asking new applicants to complete the first part of the application process online.

*Update: March 2011: New | Help Sheet 15: People with Disabilities on Reserve: The PWD Designation.

Help Sheet Updates and Cuts to Medical Coverage

March 31, 2010

Dear Community Partner,

We have completed the annual update of our Help Sheet publications. These free self-help guides are designed for people with disabilities who need to access provincial disability benefits and the medical services, equipment and supplies provided by the Ministry of Housing and Social Development (MHSD).

We hope these publications will help you to understand general program policies, regulations and requirements, and assist you to obtain disability benefits.

There are important changes which we have incorporated into the Help Sheets. Following the March 2nd budget, the Ministry of Housing and Social Development announced a number of cuts to the health and medical services available to people receiving provincial disability benefits and income assistance. The BCCPD is very concerned about the impact that these changes will have on our community. If you share our concerns, we invite you to write to Minister Coleman and your MLA. Please go to our website at www.bccpd.bc.ca for more information.

Help Sheet Information: this year, we are offering 3 of our Help Sheets in Chinese along with the 14 Help Sheets in English. We hope to gradually make more Help Sheets available in other languages as funding permits. All of the publications are available on our website. You are welcome to photocopy them.

Survey: on the back of this form, you will find a short survey on our Help Sheets. We would appreciate your feedback and hope you will take a few minutes to tell us what you think. Your comments help us to respond to our community’s needs.

Ordering: If you would like any of the Help Sheets mailed to you please complete the enclosed order form. You can either mail, fax, or email the order form and survey back to us.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jane Dyson

Executive Director, BC Coalition of People with Disabilities
