What can you do to support inclusive education?

Whether you are an educator, student or parent, you play an important role in furthering inclusive education in B.C.

  • Sign the Declaration of Support for Inclusive Education.
  • Celebrate community living month with an inclusive education theme.
  • Celebrate Inclusive Education Week in February.
  • Become involved with the Parent Advisory Council at the school your child attends and the District Parent Advisory Council that advises your School Board.
  • Become a representative on the School Planning Council at the school your child attends or work to educate the current representatives on the School Planning Council on issues related to supporting students with special needs and inclusive education.
  • Obtain a copy of your School District's Accountability Contract to determine if accountability measures have been developed for students who follow modified educational programs.
  • Participate in discussions about inclusion practices and support to students in inclusive classrooms in your district.
  • Join or develop an Inclusive Education Committee in your community to become knowledgeable about special education issues and support other families who face challenges in accessing appropriate educational supports for their children.
  • Maintain contact with your school trustees and your local MLA to advise them of important educational issues of concern in your community.
  • Write letters to elected officials, provincially and locally, regarding issues related to inclusive public education that have an impact on you and your family. Your voice matters and needs to be heard.
  • Donate to BCACL so that we can continue our work of promoting inclusive education at the provincial level.
