BCACL is a recognized provincial advocate

Since 1955, BCACL has been recognized as an advocate for the rights of 35,000 British Columbians who have developmental disabilities. Our goal is to ensure that every community is a place where people with developmental disabilities and their families can participate as full citizens, and where the diverse abilities of all people are welcome. We work with the general public, government, industry and educators to increase access to community services and supports, enhance opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, and build public understanding and community partnerships.

Our provincial advocacy work addresses a broad range of issues. Our work is based on policy developed by people with developmental disabilities, family members, advocates and service providers involved in our provincial federation.

While our focus is on advocacy at a provincial and national level, at times BCACL is also a voice for individuals. When called upon, we put our province-wide network and resources to work so individuals' rights are respected, their voices heard, and their needs met. We make every effort to link individuals with the advocacy resources in their own community.
