BCCPD opposes TransLink plan to eliminate TaxiSaver program for HandyDART users

While timelines have yet to be finalized it appears that TaxiSaver coupons will not be accepted after June 2013 and that registrants after July 2012 will not be able to purchase them.

The Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of BC (COSCO) and the BC Coalition of People with Disabilities (BCCPD) are extremely disappointed that the program is slated to end. “This will definitely have a negative impact on seniors living on low income and frail seniors who use taxi savers,” said Lorraine Logan Vice President of COSCO.

BC Employnet: Changes needed to advance employment for people with developmental disabilities in BC

BCACL recently supported BC EmployNet members from Powell River, North Vancouver, Prince George, and more to meet in Burnaby.

Discussions at the meeting focused on areas of concern for the network and how we can work collaboratively to address their concerns going forward. Some of these concerns included members’ ability to offer competitive wages to supported employment staff, the impact of BC’s new Employment Service Centers on their work, and sustaining momentum for the movement to help people with developmental disabilities to take their place in the workforce.

New report released on Home and Shared Living roundtable

On September 23, 2011, the Executive Directors' Network of the BC Association for Community Living hosted a provincial roundtable on home sharing philosophy, models and practice for executive directors, CEO's, program managers and coordinators working in not-for-profit and private organizations that provide this option of residential service.

The event revisited recommendations and actions associated with the Family Life Model of Care Forum held in 2007 and to ask critical questions around values & philosophy, standards, roles, sustainability, risks and practice implications.

BCACL’s Board of Directors welcomed three new organizations to the federation at its April 1, 2012 meeting. About the Caucus

A Caucus term is for two years. There are usually 3 meetings per year. Meetings take place on Thursdays (2:00 pm – 6:00 pm) and on Fridays (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) in New Westminster. It is important that people running for a seat on the Caucus are able to attend all meetings and carry out all their responsibilities. There is a big time commitment involved.
