The Criminal Justice System
When people with developmental disabilities are accused of or involved in a crime, they come into contact with a criminal justice system that often does not understand their needs. They may not fully understand the legal system or the nature of questions being asked, and they may not be fully informed of their right to legal help. They may also serve a longer time in jail than others because of the lack of appropriate supports and supervised settings in the community.
